Event ownership — owner and venue

Every event in Dockside has two organisations attached to it: an owner and a venue. Most of the time they are the same club, so you never think about it. They matter when a class association or another body runs an event at a club that is not its own.

Owner and venue

The owner is the organisation that runs the event. It is responsible for the event and its settings, and its officials can manage it.

The venue is the club where the event is held. A venue is always a club, because racing happens at a club's water.

For a club running its own club racing, the owner and the venue are the same club. There is nothing to decide.

When they differ

They come apart when an association owns an event but holds it at a host club. A class association running a travellers' series, or a regional body running an open meeting, owns the event, but each round is hosted at a different club. The association is the owner; the host club is the venue.

This is why, when you create an event as an association, Dockside asks you to choose a Host Club as the venue. The host club provides the water and the local arrangements; the association owns the event and its results across the venues it visits.

Why separate them

Keeping owner and venue apart lets the same event travel between clubs while staying one event under one owner. The association sees its whole series in one place, and each host club's part is attributed to the right venue, rather than the event being copied and split across clubs that have no shared owner.
