Run a handicap event
A handicap event lets boats of different classes race together and be scored on corrected time, so a faster boat does not automatically beat a slower one. In Dockside, you run a handicap event by setting the scoring type to Corrected Time.
This article builds on Create an event. It covers the fields that are specific to a handicap event.
Access. You need the Official or Admin permission on the club that will run the event.
Set up the handicap event
- Go to your club's page and select Create Event.
- Fill in Event Name and Event Organiser.
- Choose the Event Type. You can run a handicap event as an Open, Series, or Regatta event.
- In the Competition Setup section, set Scoring Type to Corrected Time. This is described in the form as handicap-adjusted time scoring.

- Set the Handicap Type to the handicap system your fleet uses, for example UK PY. Dockside uses it to work out each boat's corrected time.

- Set the Registration & Access options and the Race Schedule, then select Create Event.
Any class can enter
A handicap event does not have a Classes section. Because every class is scored on its handicap, any class can enter, so you do not pick a class list when you create the event. Sailors choose their class when they register.
Publish the event
Dockside creates the event as a draft. To make it visible to sailors, select Edit Event on the event page, open the Basic tab, set Status to Published, and select Save. See Create an event for the publish step in full.
Pursuit racing
A pursuit race is another way to use handicaps: instead of correcting times at the finish, it staggers the start so the first boat home wins. To set one up, see Set up a pursuit race.
