Edit a scoring profile's rules

This article covers how to change the rules inside a scoring profile: how each scoring code is scored, and how discards work, for each racing event type. To create a profile in the first place, see Create a scoring profile.

Access. You need the Official or Admin permission on the club.

Open the rules editor

  1. Go to your club's page and select Scoring Profiles.
  2. Find the profile you want to change.
  3. Select Edit Rules on its row.

The Edit Rules button, circled, on a scoring profile's row.

This is separate from the Edit button next to it: Edit changes only the profile's name and description, while Edit Rules changes how it scores. The Edit Scoring Rules dialog opens.

The Edit Scoring Rules dialog showing the Series, Regatta, and Open tabs.

Choose the event type

The dialog has three tabs across the top: Series, Regatta, and Open. Each holds its own rules, so the same profile can score a weekly series differently from a one-day open meeting. Choose the tab for the event type you want to change before editing anything. Repeat for the other tabs if you want to change them too.

Each tab has three sections, described below.

Set the discard rules

The Discard Rules section is at the top of each tab. It controls how many races are dropped from a sailor's total. Choose one:

  • Default Formula uses the standard pattern most clubs follow: one discard for every three races sailed, with a minimum of one race. The section shows the exact rule, for example 1 discard for every 3 races (minimum 1 race).
  • Percentage of Races discards a share of the races sailed. Choose the Discard Percentage and a Rounding Method (Round down (floor) or Round up (ceil)) for when the share is not a whole number.
  • Custom Sequence lets you set exactly how many discards apply at each number of races sailed.

The discard rule you set here is shown to race officers when they choose this profile for an event, for example Discard Rule: 50% of races.

Set the event-type defaults

The Event Settings section sets defaults for this event type:

  • Default Scoring Code is the code applied when a sailor has no recorded finish, usually DNC.
  • Fleet Size Basis decides which fleet count formulas use. Leave this on Series Competitors. (The Race Competitors option is marked DEPRECATED and should not be used for new profiles.)
  • Allow entry date exemptions for this event type changes how sailors who joined partway through are scored. Leave it off unless your club has agreed to use it.

Change how a code is scored

The Scoring Rules section lists every scoring code. Each row shows the code and a preview of how it is currently scored, for example raceCompetitors + 1. For a definition of each code, see Scoring codes, or hover the help icon on the code's row.

To change a code:

  1. Select the code's row to expand it.
  2. Choose a Calculation Type:
    • Fixed Value scores a set number of points. Enter the number.
    • Formula scores points from a formula. Build it by choosing a Variable (such as Series Competitors), an Operator, and a Value. Dockside shows the Generated Formula below, for example seriesCompetitors + 1.
    • Average (RDG) scores the average of the sailor's other races, used for redress and duty codes. Choose RDGa - Average of All Races or RDGb - Average of Races Before, and set the Minimum Races needed before the average applies.
    • Same As (Alias) scores the code the same way as another code you pick.
    • Penalty adds a penalty to the sailor's finishing position. Choose Fleet Percentage (a share of race starters, per RRS 44.3) or Fixed Points, then set the value.
  3. Fill in the inputs for the type you chose.

A panel at the top of the dialog confirms All Formulas Valid when your formulas are sound, and lists any problems if they are not. Fix any reported problems before saving.

Save the rules

When you have finished, select Save Rules at the bottom of the dialog. Your changes apply to events that use this profile. Select Cancel to close without saving.

Changing a profile's rules affects how events using it are scored. If results have already been published from this profile, check with whoever runs your results before changing it mid-season.
