Choosing the right event type

Explainer

When you create an event you choose its type, and the type shapes how the event is scheduled and whether it involves racing. Picking the right one saves you fighting the form later. There are five.

The three racing types

The racing types differ mainly in how they spread racing over time.

Open is a single day of racing. Choose it for a normal club race day or a one-day open meeting. Dockside sets the end date to match the start date, so you only pick one date.

Series is a season of racing held on the same day each week, such as a Tuesday evening series. You choose the day of the week, and Dockside generates a race day for each matching date between the start and end dates. Choose it when racing repeats on a regular weekday over several weeks.

Regatta is a multi-day event with racing on each day, such as a championship or a weekend regatta. Dockside generates a race day for each day in the range, and you can add extra dates by hand. Choose it when racing runs across consecutive days rather than weekly.

All three share the same competition settings: a scoring type, classes, and a scoring template. If you start an Open event and then add more race dates, Dockside changes it to a Regatta for you, because more than one day is no longer a single-day event.

The two non-racing types

Training is for coaching or instruction, and Social is for a non-racing social event. Neither is scored, so when you choose one of these the competition settings disappear and the schedule asks only for a start and end date. Choose these when there is nothing to score.

Changing your mind

The type is not fixed once the event exists. You can change it later in the Event Type field on the Basic tab, though switching a racing event to Training or Social clears its competition settings. See Event form fields.
